Sandstone, Minnesota – May 28th, 2008 – Are you interested in learning more about carbon credits and the economic opportunities they may hold for area landowners and entrepreneurs? Would you like a better understanding of the cap & trade systems being proposed at both the Upper Midwest and the Federal levels? Please come to this FREE event, Carbon Credits and Cap & Trade Systems: Opportunities in Northeast Minnesota, and learn more.

The Northeast Region Clean Energy Resource Team (CERT) will host the event. “There is no question that we are caught up in a cultural transition,” says Northeast Coordinator Bill Mittlefehldt. “You can see it at the gas pumps. The reason we are hosting this event is to drawn attention to the climate challenges, energy depletion and also community opportunities within our region. Come join us as we learn our way together into the 21st century.”

Ty Johnson, Buildings & Grounds Manager, will give a tour of the Audubon Center’s wind, solar, and geothermal systems, followed by Steve Taff, U of M Associate Professor of Applied Economics, giving an overview of carbon credits and cap & trade systems. Dean Current, U of M Research Associate in Forest Resources will then present on carbon credit opportunities in Northeast Minnesota.

The Clean Energy Resource Teams are a joint program of the University of Minnesota Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships, the Southwest Regional Development Commission, the Minnesota Project, Minnesota Department of Commerce, and the Green Institute. The CERTs program brings together team members from diverse backgrounds including farmers, utility representatives, state and federal government staff, educators and academics, small business owners, members of non-profit and environmental groups as well as individuals interested in energy issues. Together they work to identify and implement community-scale energy efficiency and renewable energy projects across the state. Major funding is provided by Minnesota Department of Commerce, The Blandin Foundation, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, University of Minnesota Institute for Renewable Energy and the Environment, University of Minnesota Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships, and U.S. Department of Energy.
