Excerpt: WORTHINGTON — Worthington homeowners who wish to buy a programmable thermostat can now earn rebates on their purchase.

Minnesota Energy Resources is offering its customers in Worthington a rebate for half of the cost of a programmable thermostat, up to $40. In addition, the Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs) and Honeywell are offering a rebate for up to $10 on a Honeywell Do-It-Yourself programmable thermostat through November.

The Honeywell rebate is available to Minnesota and Iowa residents.

“Combining the two rebates, that’s up to $50 off a new programmable thermostat, bringing an $80 model down to only $30,” explained CERT Coordinator Joel Haskard in a news release. “When you consider that the average resident in Worthington who installs a programmable thermostat could save up to $200 a year, this is one of the smartest investments around.”

The average Upper Midwest household that sets back its thermostat in the summer and winter using default settings saves around 15 percent on heating and 25 percent on cooling costs.

Most programmable thermostats have four modes, explained Dan Thiede of Minnesota CERT, and a quality model doesn’t usually run more than $50. More expensive models for which the user can set a different program for every day of the week can costs about $80.
