100 Schools, 3 years…How much carbon can they cut? MN Schools Cutting Carbon is a project to involve high school and university students across MN in an effort to reduce carbon footprints at schools across the state.
The Clean Energy Resource Team, MN Pollution Control Agency, and the MN Office of Energy Security collaborated to create a joint project, MN Schools Cutting Carbon. The project is a three-year initiative to give 100 Minnesota public high schools, colleges, and universities technical assistance and mini-grants to make their schools more energy efficient and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Patrick Santelli, the student coordinator for MN Schools Cutting Carbon said the program “offers students a chance to receive funding to put their ideas into action”. The program will provide grants of up to $500 for interested teams to create a plan to lower their schools carbon footprint. In the second year of the program 10-15 schools will be picked to receive grants of up to $20,000 to implement the teams plans.
The program also invites administration, faculty, or maintenance to apply for the grants. “Many schools building can drastically cut costs and reduce greenhouse gases” said Patrick. Minnesota Schools Cutting Carbon is a joint program of the Clean Energy Resource Teams, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Minnesota Office of Energy Security. Funding for this project was provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR)
