Iron Range Community Sustainability Initiative offers $500 awards

The mission of Iron Range Partnership for Sustainability (IRPS) is to stimulate conversation and action for a sustainable future on the Iron Range of northeastern Minnesota.

In keeping with their mission, the Iron Range Partnership for Sustainability is pleased to announce it’s new Community Sustainability Initiative. This Community Sustainability Initiative (CSI) is an opportunity for you and your groups, families or students to take action in your home, school, church, businesses or church on encouraging sustainable practices and working to make the future more sustainable.

If you think your communities need something that will make them a better place to live and have an idea you always wanted to do, but lacked the funding and support, or just want to take an opportunity to teach youth what sustainability means, then IRPS has just the project you are looking for.

The community sustainability initiative is intended to provide the opportunity for groups in northeastern Minnesota to take action on one of the three areas of sustainability. Each of these three areas of sustainability offer a multitude of project potentials ripe for the picking. This year at the Iron Range Earth Fest IRPS will be awarding four $500 stipends to implement projects that exemplify sustainable practices.

  • Economy
  • Community
  • Environment

A few ideas to help get the think tanks rolling would include:

  • New and improved recycling program
  • Food garden with a twist
  • A simpler or more equitable food distribution system
  • Transportation alternatives to the automobile
  • Ways to reduce the amount of trash generated on a daily basis
  • Energy efficiency programs or energy conservation practices
  • Ecological improvements to encourage wildlife, insects, native plant species or water quality
  •

If your group designs a project with a good implementation plan that you think may be worthy of completing, fill out the application form and submit it to the CSI Committee by March 21, 2016. A poster board display of your proposed project will also need to be on display during the 2016 Iron Range Earth Fest for the public to view. The CSI committee will review all submission and will announce their decision at 2:30 pm on April 23rd at the Iron Range Earth Fest. Recipients will be asked to report back on their progress at the 2017 Earth Fest.

Questions can be directed to Jim DeVries at [email protected] or (218) 410-6154
