Minnesota Schools Cutting Carbon

We need your help. We are working to identify 100 public high schools, colleges and universities across Minnesota to take part in the Minnesota Schools Cutting Carbon program.

There are so many schools doing great things right now to reduce their energy costs and carbon footprints; we hope that this will be an additional resource to help them meet their goals.

Program Resources include:

  • There will be $50,000 in “mini-grants” – $500 for each student group to help them implement their carbon-cutting project(s).
  • There will be ten (and potentially twelve) $20,000 competitive grants for schools with the most creative and effective projects to reduce energy use.
  • There will be $375,000 of technical assistance available across the state for the 100 participating schools to reduce their energy usage.
  • There will be a website that links and tracks all 100 schools. It will provide a platform for students and teachers to share resources and ideas, raise additional funds, and calculate their carbon savings.

To see the Frequently Asked Questions we get from teachers, please click here

Please help us spread the word! Click here to download the application. Please call or e-mail your local public high school, junior college, or college/university and insist (well, at least strongly suggest) that they take advantage of this program.

The deadline for application is December 15th, but we recommend folks get the applications sent in ASAP.

CERTs 2009 Conference Announces
Six In-Depth Energy Workshops and
CERTs Clean + Green Video Contest

CERTs 2009 will take place on February 10-11, 2009 in St. Cloud, MN. The event will kick off on the 10th with In-Depth Workshops and an evening reception, where we'll host the Clean + Green Film Festival.

In-Depth Energy Workshops

Community-Based Energy Development
During this workshop you will learn the basics of Community-Based Energy Development, the steps for putting together a community wind project, business models for wind development featuring a panel of developers. You will also dig into the economic feasibility of wind, as well as policies and incentives in Minnesota that support community-based energy development.

Accelerating Residential Efficiency
The residential sector is one of the largest energy consumers in Minnesota, and therefore holds great potential for energy efficiency. Find out how utilities, non-profits, and community groups are working to accelerate programs and learning to help residents conserve.

Saving Energy is Smart Business
Learn how your business can save money by taking advantage of existing Conservation Improvement Programs (CIP) offered by Minnesota’s energy utilities.  Business executives will also share their stories of implementing energy efficiency upgrades, receiving rebates through the CIP process and realizing substantial dollar savings on monthly electric bills.

Creating a Clean Energy School
There are schools across the state, at all levels, that are working to save energy and produce clean energy, issues that are especially important with our current climate crisis and fuel costs. In this workshop we will learn from schools who are working on innovative projects, with major results. We will break into small groups to find out what administrators, operators, teachers, and students can do to be a part of the action. Finally, we will provide schools with a chance to connect with service-providers that can help them plan and implement their projects.

Best Practices for Local Governments
Local government leaders at the city and county level will share step-by-step the trailblazing initiatives that they are undertaking to determine their clean energy future, leading us toward a discussion of best practices for local governments working on clean energy.

Networking for Clean Energy
Everyone has heard terms like "online community" and knows the basics of "networking," but how can we as communities use web-based tools for effective collaboration and information-sharing? This workshop will include case studies, review of available tools, technology primers, and best practices.

University of Minnesota Wins Champion of Sustainability Award for Work with CERTs

The University of Minnesota recently received one of five Champions of Sustainability in Communities Awards given by the Sustainable Endowments Institute for the first time this year. The Champions Award recognizes schools with community partnerships that demonstrate the impact of collaboration in achieving sustainability goals.

Since 1997, the University of Minnesota Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships (Regional Partnerships) have played a unique role in identifying and implementing solutions to complex community issues facing greater Minnesota under the guiding principles of sustainability. The Regional Partnerships’ commitment to sustainable communities is based on a belief that a public research university, coupled with civic creativity and leadership, can produce long-lasting, positive benefits across the state. The six citizen-led boards serve a catalyzing role by linking local needs and innovation with university expertise and broad multi-sector/multi-agency partnerships.

One of the most prominent, successful, and award-winning programs—-the Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs)—-addresses conservation, efficiency, renewable energy, and regional energy self-reliance with strong involvement from grassroots communities, local institutions, and key public agencies and nonprofits. CERTs, formed in 2002, exemplifies the Regional Partnerships model of serving as a public space and innovation incubator, providing resources to combine the best of local and academic knowledge in solving community-articulated energy issues.

CERT members, like those involved with the Regional Partnerships, draw upon the university, state agencies, and partnering nonprofits as resources, but also influence the university’s agendas through convening citizen voices to articulate their needs to facilitate clean energy solutions for rural Minnesota communities.

Book Highlight: The Green Collar Economy by Van Jones

Cross-posted from Center for American Progress

Image Source: Center for American Progress In The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems, acclaimed activist and environmental leader Van Jones tackles the challenges of oil dependence, a sagging economy, and global warming itself, transforming these looming threats into enormous financial opportunities.

Jones gives voice to a different kind of environmentalism, one deeply rooted in the lives and struggles of ordinary people. It’s not about green consumers; it’s about green workers and bringing the environmental movement to the working class. The message of The Green Collar Economy is clear: “Give the work that most needs to be done to the people who most need the work,” solving two pressing problems—pollution and poverty—at once. In turn, you provide people with not just a paycheck, but also a purpose. Like FDR’s New Deal, Jones’s plan involves the government putting people to work for the benefit of the economy. In this “New Green Deal,” workers will be employed to install solar panels, harness wind power, build hybrid engines, etc., which will create a green collar workforce.

Minnesota Powershift: Connecting Communities, Creating Change

You betcha, Powershift will soon be making a visit to the great state of Minnesota. The home of nice people, hotdish, Garrison Keillor, the Democrat-Farmer-Labor party, community wind, the highest voter participation rates in the country, and the Mall of America now has its very own Powershift!

Minnesota Powershift 2008 is much more than a conference. It is part of a process of building people power around a vision for a clean energy economy and a sustainable future that can unite rural farmers, inner-city residents, labor leaders, small businesses, students, and local governments. It is a recognition of our own role in making change, bridging the gaps between our personal lives and the sweeping changes that must be made. Its time to build a climate positive society, one that has moved beyond “limiting the damage” we do to the global environment and oppressed communities and instead engages proactively and eagerly in the opportunities inherent in a post-carbon society.

37 Minnesota Energy Efficiency & Clean Energy Projects Receive CERTs Mini-Grants

CERTs Mini-Grants Awarded In April 2008, the Minnesota Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs) received over 90 submissions for this year’s Request for Proposals to fund energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. This represents nearly a twofold increase in the amount of proposals submitted for spring of 2008, and attests to the tremendous wealth of clean energy projects happening in communities across the state.

Each of the six greater Minnesota steering committees (NE, NW, Central, WC, SW, SE) reviewed the proposals submitted in their region, and through a rigorous process selected 37 projects that highlight a variety of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. CERTs staff wish to commend our steering committee members for all the hard work and many hours of volunteer time they put into this effort.
