Dependent upon qualifications and experience, the hiring range for the position is expected to be $105-115k.

Primary Duties


 As a key member of our accounting team, the Controller maintains a deep understanding of the financial and operational aspects of the nonprofit sector and GAAP (FASB) standards.  In a full-time role reporting to the CFO, the Controller shows excellent technical ability and will work with directly with staff, program managers, clients and customers to facilitate accurate and timely financial reports for CEE. The Controller is accountable for directing and monitoring of accounting functions of the Center for Energy and Environment which includes the organization’s annual financial audit process (including preparation of GAAP financial statements) and Form 990 tax return.

This position has direct supervisory responsibility for 2-4 staff positions.

  • Monitor, coordinate, and direct the quality and accuracy of work performed by accounting staff, recommending and implementing actions as appropriate.

  • Coordinate and monitor accounting functions related to, but not limited to: procurement, accounts receivable, accounts payable, fund disbursements, account reconciliations, journal entry preparation, net assets, and federal fund compliance.

  • Coordinate audit process and completion of audit work papers; oversee the logistics of the audit from planning through wrap-up (annual task).

  • Coordinate completion of Form 990 tax return (annual task).

  • Assist CFO in advising management on short-term and long-term financial objectives, policies, and actions.  

  • Develop internal control policies, guidelines, and procedures for activities such as accounting, reporting, cash management, and budget administration.  

  • Assist in the financial contract management process by interacting with project managers, performing monitoring activities, and preparing required reports.

  • Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements and provide guidance industry best practices.

  • Provide strong supervision and development of direct report staff.

  • Support all CEE staff by maintaining productive and positive interactions, providing accurate and timely reporting and offering guidance and support in decision making.

  • Other duties as assigned or apparent.


Technical Knowledge:

  • Full knowledge of GAAP (FASB) accounting standards.

  • Knowledge of government (state and federal) policies impacting the nonprofit sector and monitor the impact on CEE’s operations and programs.

  • Working knowledge of accounting software packages, Sage Intacct preferred.

  • Utilizes learning opportunities to remain up-to-date on technical knowledge.


  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

  • Respond to meeting requests, check emails and input your activities into your work calendar.

  • Schedule and attend meetings as applicable with both internal and external constituents.

  • Willingness and ability to provide strong supervision, development and evaluation of direct report staff.

  • Must be able to travel to both the St. Paul and Minneapolis office locations, as well as external locations (i.e. client sites, vendor locations).



  • Minimum of five years of relative work experience as an Assistant Controller or Controller.

  • Education: BS/BA degree in accounting or related field is required.

  • Nonprofit accounting experience is highly preferred but not required.

  • People management experience is preferred.

  • Proficiency in applicable software (Microsoft Office, Google Suite) required and accounting programs (Sage Intacct preferred).
