Organization Summary

The Environment and Sustainability Planner will assist in the economic resiliency of the region by integrating sustainability initiatives and energy conservation strategies into the regional planning efforts of RNDC.

Work areas may include providing technical assistance to local units of government, businesses, and the general public on a variety of planning and development topics, such as economic development, workforce development, and community development. Work area also includes securing funding for programs through grant writing and the coordination, development, and implementation of programs and projects of importance to the region.

Primary Duties

Promote, research, and support the goal of ensuring the long-term resiliency of communities through a sustainability approach emphasizing the economy, society, and environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

  • Support the development and implementation of the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) objectives with a focus on resiliency-based planning and sustainability which may include energy alternatives, solid waste, ecological land, and water conservation.
  • Build relationships and collaborate with various stakeholders including government, non-profit organizations, and informal groups to advance sustainability and environmental priorities in alignment with the CEDS.
  • Facilitate energy, sustainability, and resiliency action plans.
  • Assist communities to establish sustainability targets, seizing energy efficiency and reduction opportunities, use of renewable energy sources and foster a stronger culture of resource conservation.
  • Assists business owners and communities in determining their needs and priorities; help identify state, federal, or local funding to meet those needs.
  • Assist communities with the development of pilot programs relating to waste collection activities including complete recycling programs and composting activities.
  • Enhance sustainability communication and outreach by generating content for website, social media, public presentations, newsletters, and other publications as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to leverage economic development experience and tools across programs.
  • Prepare and coordinate public engagement supporting energy and sustainability.
  • Serve as educational and expert liaison to the public, board, and staff.
  • Provides a cost-conscious approach to the position by working within approved budgets and implementing cost-saving measures.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT

RNDC is a small office of approximately 15 professional staff in a flexible working environment.

The individual must be able to perform reliable work in both independent and team project settings, mainly using a computer to complete projects. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee regularly remains in a stationary position at a desk. The employee may regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

Experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Conceptual knowledge of the regulated and retail electricity and gas energy industry
  • Strong interpersonal communication and group presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize multiple simultaneous work assignments and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively with a broad range of people, organizations, and styles.
  • Ability to work independently, but work cooperatively and collaboratively as a team player with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to develop relationships with key partners, both internal and external.
  • Knowledge of personal computers and software, including the Microsoft Office suite.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A four-year degree in biology, environmental science, environmental education, urban studies, public administration, sustainable project management, or closely related field. Advanced coursework is a plus.
  • Two years of experience managing/coordinating environmental or natural resource or sustainability programs; or equivalent education and experience.
  • Knowledge of sustainability theories and practices; local, national, and global sustainability and environmental initiatives.
  • Familiarity with networks of organizations involved in advancing sustainability policy and action. Experience writing and educating a wide array of audiences, making scientific or environmental information understandable and relatable to the general audience.
  • Willingness and ability to research and make recommendations.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
