Primary Duties

THIS POSITION   

GPI seeks an experienced federal Grant Writer to help us seize this window of opportunity for increased impact made possible by growing investment in climate solutions by the federal government. The Grant Writer will play a lead role in prospecting, cultivating, and securing grants from federal agencies in support of GPI’s mission. Guided by GPI’s strategic plan, the Grant Writer will be responsible for working with program staff and the CEO to match GPI funding priorities with sources of federal funding. Objectives include, but are not limited to, the following:  

  • Responding to RFIs to help shape final federal funding opportunities  
  • Researching and qualifying potential federal funding opportunities  
  • Synthesizing and writing compelling grant proposals  
  • Managing the submission process  
  • Coordinating with GPI staff to ensure appropriate tracking, reporting, and funder stewardship  

The successful candidate will be highly collaborative and expected to work both independently and with colleagues as needed, with a goal of engaging program colleagues and the CEO in ways that maximize overall value to the organization. The ideal candidate will bring experience and a track record of success and the ability to translate that experience to a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Hours may be flexible and are typically Monday through Friday during the business day. Work may take place remotely and/or at GPI’s headquarters in Minneapolis depending on the needs of the work and the successful candidate. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 

Funder Prospecting Research: 

  • Develop and maintain an understanding of GPI’s programs and the evolving portfolio of work that may lend itself to federal funding 
  • Work with Program VPs and the CEO to understand fundraising priorities 
  • Lead the prospecting effort to match potential federal funders with those priorities 
  • Provide GPI teams with profiles of key federal program staff who have roles in administering federal grant programs.  
  • Work with colleagues to ensure that we accurately record these written funder summaries in GPI’s CRM. 

Funder Cultivation: 

  • Work with program staff to respond in a timely way to RFIs issued by federal agencies, with a goal of influencing the scope and nature of final funding announcements 
  • Help coordinate and support the cultivation process with Program VPs, other program staff involved in fundraising, and the CEO. 
  • Produce compelling federal grant proposals in collaboration with program staff, coordinating the proposal development process and engaging program colleagues when their content expertise is required. In practice, this will mean learning the working styles of GPI’s program teams and tailoring the grant-writing process accordingly—sometimes that will mean interviewing program staff and then writing the grant proposal; sometimes it will mean doing first drafts and then having program staff review them. The goal will be to draw on program staff time only to the degree needed for a high-quality proposal.  
  • Coordinate with the Finance Team to ensure that grant proposal budgets and other materials are ready for timely submission of grant proposals 
  • Maintain a calendar of expected grant award notifications, accessible to GPI colleagues 
  • Provide advice and recommendations on how best to systematize the federal grant-seeking process at GPI. 

Funder Stewardship: 

  • Work with relevant colleagues to ensure that GPI appropriately acknowledges grant awards. 
  • Where relevant, develop and maintain a calendar of grant-making cycles by federal funder 
  • Work with Programs and Communications colleagues to regularly summarize program accomplishments for sharing with funders, demonstrating the impact of GPI’s work. 
  • Provide regular grant-seeking updates at GPI’s Management Team and Fundraising Team meetings. 
  • Keep track of changes in federal program personnel who have grantmaking responsibilities. 
Experience

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS  

Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience 
  • At least three years of proven federal grant writing experience  
  • Educational or professional background in climate and clean energy or related field 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and adapt to multiple work styles to build strong professional relationships 
  • Excellent research, writing, typing and verbal communication skills.  
  • Proactive problem-solver 
  • Experience managing multiple projects with competing deadlines 
  • High attention to detail and ability to work independently. 
  • Excellent time, deadline, and project management skills. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and website  
  • Commitment to the vision, mission, values, and goals of the Great Plains Institute 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Existing network of relationships with federal grantmaking programs 
  • Experience writing grants related to climate and/or clean energy 
  • Experience working in a Constituent Relationship Software (CRM), particularly Salesforce

TRAVEL

This position may include travel to Washington D.C on an as-needed basis (with prior approval). Applicants who wish to remain based outside the Twin Cities should expect to travel to GPI headquarters in Minneapolis periodically (costs reimbursed).
