Primary Duties: 

The Lending Accountant is a member of the accounting team and is responsible for accounting and reconciliation activities in support of the Lending Center department of CEE. This includes reconciliation of loan and servicing accounts, monthly client invoicing, client communications, data entry and analytics, report production and coordination with the overall Accounting team.

The Lending Accountant is responsible for accurate and compliant accounting and reconciliation of lending program activity from the lending software through to the accounting system. The position works closely with both the lending and accounting departments in support of strong internal controls, regulatory compliance and effective client relations. The position requires a deep knowledge of accounting standards and financial reporting in accordance with GAAP. Experience with mortgage lending and mortgage loan processing is preferred as well.

This staff-level position reports to the Accounting Supervisor and has no supervisory responsibilities.
As part of the administrative team, this position may also assist with overflow work assigned from administrative and other departments within CEE.

Responsibilities:

Lending and servicing (70%)

  • Analyze lending fund activity and related financial transactions
  • Research financial discrepancies between records, reports, and systems and coordinate resolution
  • Prepare monthly loan servicing and cash accounting entries related to lending activity
  • Prepare monthly client invoices in accordance with contract specifications
  • Monitor cash flow and funds designated by the board for lending
  • Collaborate with others to gather data, resolve issues, and produce accurate and reliable reports
  • Manage accounting and reporting for various loan program activities and measures
  • Review lending and servicing reports, identify problem areas and report to the Lending Center
  • Assist in the preparation and review of annual loan servicing reporting to customers

Accounting (30%)

  • Report and present financial information to accounting and lending teams
  • Ensure accuracy when performing general ledger reviews, identify and analyze issues, provide guidance and coordinate resolution as necessary
  • Prepare lending related audit work papers and participate in the annual audit process
  • Compile lending data for annual reporting on the Form 990 and related schedules
  • Attend at least 20 hours of training/continuing education annually (or whatever is required for any certification)
  • Regulatory compliance and internal controls
  • Maintain proficiency in current lending/servicing regulations
  • Develop and maintain an ongoing/systematic quality control system
  • Develop and maintain appropriate internal controls
  • Prepare reports for federally funded programs

Experience: 

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

  • 4 year accounting degree or equivalent experience in the accounting field
  • General knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Excel and MS Word and basic office experience required, along with ability to work in a database such as lending program systems (PowerLender; LoanPro)
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks accounting software, Access databases and nonprofit accounting a plus
  • Must be very detailed, have excellent communication skills, the ability to meet deadlines and be able to work independentlyv
  • As an employee with access to highly sensitive materials, maintaining a level of confidentiality at all times
  • Understand and adhere to corporate policies and procedures and attend trainings as requested
  • Schedule and attend meetings as applicable with both internal and external constituents
  • Prepare annual reviews and adhere to job duty and attendance expectations as directed by your supervisor
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds as well as carry, push, pull, kneel and squat
  • Must be able to travel to both the St. Paul and Minneapolis office locations, as well as external locations (i.e. client sites, vendor locations)
  • Primary working hours are during CEE’s business hours, but overtime hours may be required occasionally throughout the year (for example, in preparation for the annual financial audit)
