Primary Duties: 

The Center for Energy and Environment (CEE) seeks a full-time writer/editor to drive and support communications projects at CEE. The writer/editor develops and refines original content, including related project management. Candidate must demonstrate curiosity, initiative, and capacity to balance urgency with quality. Finalists will be skilled writers and project managers, able to manage complex projects in a fast-paced environment with accuracy, creativity, attention to deadlines, accountability, and a keen aptitude with English grammar and punctuation rules. This is a full-time position that provides a wide range of benefits including Paid Time Off (PTO), medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance as well as a profit-sharing retirement plan.

This position supports all CEE departments with content creation, editing, writing assistance, and other communications services, and has no direct reports. The writer/editor channels content to diverse audiences ranging from fellow employees to homeowners, businesses, policymakers, and technical researchers. As our primary technical writer and editor, actively seeks new approaches to expand understanding of CEE’s mission and strategies.

All CEE employees are expected to work professionally with co-workers, clients, and vendors; perform duties accurately, honestly, and timely; attend trainings/meetings; read companywide emails; and adhere to attendance expectations as directed by the supervisor. This position also requires an understanding of and compliance to corporate policies and procedures including but not limited to conflicts of interest, confidentiality, and information security. Computer skills and high comfort level with modern office technology are needed.

  • Serve as CEE’s primary technical writer/editor and as project manager for print and digital communications.
  • Provide writing and copyediting to all departments, with an emphasis on research, engineering, and policy reports; research, program, and policy funding requests; and program marketing.
  • Carry out deep research as needed to inform communications (blog posts, news articles, case studies, etc.) about specific technologies, program approaches, organizations, activities, and individuals.
  • Collaborate in person and via email with internal and external partners to develop complex written products.
  • Summarize CEE’s research for posting and dissemination to broad, non-technical audiences.
  • Partner with researchers to update web content and create project deliverables (handouts, articles, etc.).
  • Lead the development of quarterly research newsletter providing updates on CEE’S latest research.
  • Ask questions and pursue constant in-house learning opportunities as background writing/editing research.
  • Support authors from across the organization to create content in their area of expertise.
  • Manage internal and external projects in partnership with external peers, clients, consultants, and staff.
  • Plan and cross-train for back-up, to support and cover the role’s contributions in the writer/editor’s absence.
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications/Job Requirements

  • Three years’ professional experience as writer/editor.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or other relevant field, or equivalent job experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced MS Word formatting techniques.
  • Flexibility to bounce among client/partner brands and styles for projects, in addition to CEE’s home style.
  • Proven ability to communicate complicated information to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing and editing proficiency.
  • Deep curiosity about Minnesota’s clean energy landscape and energy efficiency.
  • Must be organized and detail-oriented, with ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Comfortable either taking independent initiative or collaborating with a team, depending on the project.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate the manual dexterity to operate a personal computer effectively.
  • Ability to view and operate a personal computer, either desktop or laptop, for extended periods of time creating, composing and reviewing documents and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to operate general office equipment, e.g., PC, printer, fax, telephone, etc.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to carry materials weighing up to 15 pounds for CEE events and engagement opportunities.

Working Conditions

  • Primary working hours are within CEE’s business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ability to work beyond typical working hours as needed or required to meet deadlines or to investigate a building during off peak hours.
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment with high pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to perform work indoors in an office environment, whether in cubicle, open office, or private office.
