Event Description

Join Minnesota Interfaith Power & Light and their partners in the Just Solar Coalition for a tour in Northern Minnesota promoting the renewable economy. This is a great opportunity to visit solar sites and learn more about investments in the northland that are supporting a just transition to a green and sustainable economy for all.

Tour sites include:

The Pine River-Backus Public Schools is the site of a 660kW solar photovoltaic system installed in 2018. Bring your own bag lunch and enjoy a presentation by school faculty, staff, and students.

Hunt Utilities Group has a 4500 square foot building made out of straw bales and mud and decorated with fantastic art. On the tour, we’ll learn about recycling greywater, passive solar heating, heated floors, composting toilets and more. A visit to Happy Dancing Turtle will include gardens, greenhouses, and children’s educational programs.

Balsam Moon Preserve is the site of a 6.6kW solar photovoltaic system installed in 2011 along with a winter greenhouse and trails. A young non-profit organization, Balsam Moon is “an emerging vision of peace, sustainability, and renewal in partnership with earth spirit, and people.” A speaker will talk about their 200kW project being planned in partnership with the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance.

Boysnberries Farm is the site of a 40kW solar photovoltaic system installed in 2021 at this privately owned greenhouse and pumpkin patch. We’ll end our tour with a meal, live folk/bluegrass/Americana music provided by Hans Blix and the Weapons Inspectors, and climate conversations.

A featured part of the tour is the closing event in Brainerd. We’ll share a light meal, enjoy live music, and engage in climate conversations. Join this last stop on the tour as we imagine a just transition to a renewable economy—not only in metro areas, but everywhere and for everyone.
