ABOUT THE CARBON MANAGEMENT PROGRAM  

GPI’s Carbon Management Program is dedicated to fostering deployment of solutions at climate scale for managing carbon emissions from energy, industry and manufacturing, while protecting and creating high-wage, family-sustaining jobs and providing economic and environmental benefits to affected communities. Through our staffing and coordination of the Carbon Capture Coalition at the federal level, the State Carbon Capture Work Group and Regional Deployment Initiative, and Industrial Innovation Initiative, GPI’s Carbon Management Program is playing a transformative role in building broad industry, labor, and NGO engagement and support for federal and state policies necessary to put our nation on a path to net-zero emissions and achieving midcentury climate goals. The Carbon Management Program is a fast-paced collaborative team with an entrepreneurial spirit that encourages and appreciates equal contribution from members at all levels of the team.

 

ABOUT THE INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION INITIATIVE

The Industrial Innovation Initiative (I3) brings together key industrial and power companies, environmental organizations, labor unions and state officials from Midwestern and Gulf Coast states the form the Midcontinent region, industrial heartland of the U.S. The Initiative focuses on the development and implementation of federal and state policies and strategies for decarbonizing the region’s most important industrial sectors by midcentury, including steel, cement, chemicals, refining, biofuels, and pulp and paper. I3 participants presented federal COVID-19 economic recovery recommendations to Congress in July of last year, and they are currently developing a broader set of federal and state policy recommendations to be released as a blueprint for decarbonizing industry, which is slated for September of this year. GPI staffs and coordinates I3 in partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI).

Primary Duties

THIS POSITION  

The Project Manager will oversee I3 and serve as the primary point of contact for project partners and stakeholders. The project manager will also work closely with other Carbon Management team members to ensure that project goals and outcomes are achieved and will engage with the Carbon Management team on additional related projects at the direction of the Vice President for Carbon Management.

The project manager will be expected to work both independently and with colleagues on projects. The successful candidate will be able to complete various work elements from conception to completion in a timely manner and also to follow direction that may be detailed or minimal. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively and constructively with project participants from diverse backgrounds, interests and points of view; exercise good judgment in a variety of situations; maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities; utilize effective methods for time management and prioritization of tasks; and possess the ability to identify and address urgent and important needs in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Hours may be flexible and are typically Monday through Friday during the business day; some nights and weekends may be required. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide project management for the Industrial Innovation Initiative and collaborate on other work with the Carbon Management Team, including:

  • Coordinate, prepare agendas, and staff weekly project team calls;
  • Coordinate, prepare materials, and staff project work groups and plenary meetings;
  • Recruit, develop and maintain robust relationships with project participants;
  • Work with GPI and WRI’s research team to conduct and synthesize project-related analyses;
  • Develop and publish project-related blog posts, fact sheets, and web content;
  • Research federal and state policies and programs related to industrial decarbonization;
  • Coordinate project-related workshops and events;
  • Develop and execute a detailed strategy to build out federal, regional and state infrastructure for effective policy development and advocacy on industrial decarbonization, including synergies with other projects in GPI’s Carbon Management Program;
  • Participate in weekly Carbon Management staff calls;
  • Manage I3-related grants, in coordination with the Carbon Management Program Manager;
  • Prepare narrative and budget for grant and contract proposals and reports as appropriate;
  • Other programmatic assistance, as requested by the Vice President, including recommendations on strategy and budget; and
  • Support other Carbon Management Program projects (when needed and as directed).
Experience

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant proven skills and experience.
  • Prior experience (2+ years) working on public policy, federal, state or otherwise.
  • Prior experience, professional or otherwise, working with and/or coordinating individuals in coalitions or other group settings, organizing events, and attending meetings or public events on behalf of an organization.
  • Knowledge of, or prior experience with climate, energy and/or environmental issues a plus.
  • Experience with campaign strategy and execution in public policy, political and/or other contexts a plus.
  • Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to work collaboratively and effectively with very diverse individuals and institutions, including those with different backgrounds and political perspectives, with which you may personally disagree.
  • Experience developing and maintaining professional relationships.
  • High attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Excellent time and deadline management, project management and team relationship skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the Great Plains Institute.
