Primary Duties

The Senior Accountant is responsible for the general accounting functions of the Center for Energy and Environment. This mid-level position reports to the Controller. The position will work with internal staff, program managers, as well as external clients and customers to facilitate accurate and timely posting of accounting entries. The position plays a key role in the organization’s annual financial audit process and the preparation of financial statements. As part of the administrative team, this position may also assist with overflow work assigned from administrative and other departments within CEE.

This is a full time position that provides a wide range of benefits including Paid Time Off (PTO), medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance and a retirement plan.
 
Primary job responsibilities

  • Perform accounting functions related to, but not limited to: accounts receivable, accounts payable, fund disbursements, account reconciliations, journal entry preparation, net assets, and federal funds.

  • Manage process of revenue and expenses tracking to ensure revenues are recorded as earned and expenses as incurred.

  • Assist in the financial contract management process by interacting with project managers, performing monitoring activities, and preparing required reports.

  • Develop and maintain processes and procedures both accounting and administratively that support the office in terms of internal controls, ethical business practices and productive office management.

  • Assist in month-end closing, journal entry preparation, including recurring entries and reconciliation of accounts, and preparation of financial statements.   

  • Plan and meet individual timelines, operating independently with changing scope of responsibilities, as well as support colleagues.

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and year-end reports; provide information to support audits and other analysis schedules.

  • Assist with preparation of annual audit workpapers and GAAP financial statements.

  • Work collaboratively with the accounting team to ensure day to day accounting objectives are achieved.

  • Identify opportunities to change and improve the accounting process.

 
General accounting and administrative support

  • On-going monitoring and work flow processing through department email (primary responsibility for the revenue-related items).

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records within the required software (i.e. Quickbooks, Microsoft Office applications).

  • Maintain appropriate file retention (both paper and electronic) over the course of the fiscal year so, at the audit time, supporting documentation can be gathered quickly.

  • Communicate/check-in with other administrative staff when additional support is needed.

  • Back-up front desk, as requested.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 
General responsibilities

  • Support CEE staff by maintaining productive and positive interactions, providing accurate and timely reporting and offering guidance and support in decision making.

  • As an employee with access to highly sensitive materials, maintain a high level of confidentiality at all times.

  • Understand and adhere to corporate policies and procedures, attend trainings as requested and read corporate wide emails and correspondence.

  • Understand and follow the processes and procedures required for the job.

  • Respond to meeting requests, check emails and input your activities into your Google calendar.

  • Schedule and attend meetings as applicable with both internal and external constituents.

  • Prepare annual reviews and adhere to job duty and attendance expectations as directed by your supervisor.

Experience

Qualifications/Job Requirements

  • 4 year accounting degree or equivalent experience in the accounting field required. 

  • Thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). 

  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Excel and MS Word and basic office experience required. 

  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting standards, compliance with federal funds, and basic contract management is a plus.

  • Knowledge of QuickBooks accounting software, and Microsoft Office suite applications (Excel, Access, Word).

  • Must be very detailed, have excellent communication skills, the ability to meet deadlines and be able to work independently.

  • Develop and maintain a professional office environment and demeanor.

  • Routinely use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines; may occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Must be able to travel to both the St. Paul and Minneapolis office locations.

  • Primary working hours are during CEE’s business hours (40 hours per week), but overtime hours may be required occasionally throughout the year (for example, in preparation for the annual financial audit).
