Primary Duties

Senior Manager of Market Research

The Senior Manager of Market research is responsible for understanding market dynamics and overseeing primary research to assess impact and inform strategy for CEE’s Market Transformation Department. The research will guide the development of new initiatives and be deployed to refine and improve impact and results over time. This includes producing market research reports on emerging technologies in multiple energy efficiency and electrification markets, especially the lighting and HVAC markets. Market research overseen by this position will provide insights into market structure and dynamics, existing market barriers, and leverage points in the supply chain that could be opportunities for program intervention. These insights will significantly inform market transformation planning and intervention strategy. Market data collected by the Market Research team will be critical to measuring Market Progress Indicators, which will define success for the program. This is a newly created position at CEE, and the successful candidate will be a key leader involved in setting overall program strategy and direction as a member of a six-member MT management team. The position will oversee the Market Research team, including supervising direct reports and selecting and overseeing subcontractors, with a total budget of approximately $700K in 2023, which will double within several years. The position requires experience in overseeing staff and subcontractors, and significant market research knowledge and experience, including research methods, survey design, and related competencies. The successful candidate will possess this experience, plus a desire to play a key role in the formation of a new and important endeavor, alongside a team of seasoned innovators and change-leaders.

Market Transformation Team:

CEE is launching a statewide Market Transformation Program in 2023, with committed and growing funding from the State of Minnesota and its utilities. The purpose of this program is to accelerate the development and adoption of emerging energy efficiency technologies, bringing efficiency and electrification technologies and practices more rapidly to scale. With about half our positions filled by internal staff, we are building and expanding on this dream team of talent to launch and grow our Market Transformation Program into a major new source of energy and carbon reductions in the state.


  • Manage the Market Research team, which will consist of both CEE employees and subcontractors.
  • Develop and execute market research strategy for market transformation (MT) efforts
  • Lead the scoping and production of primary market research and market research reports and products that will directly inform market transformation strategy.
  • Manage RFP processes to select subcontractors for targeted research studies.
  • Produce key contract deliverables including a Market Characterization Report for each MT initiative
  • In conjunction with the evaluation lead, develop key Market Progress Indicators, which are concrete metrics that measure progress to achieving overall MT goals from year to year for a given MT technology or practice.
  • Manage market data collection and analytics efforts, including collecting whole category sales data for select technologies.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations and other internal staff and help set overall strategy and direction for MT program efforts.
  • Present project findings at applicable events and conferences.

Qualifications/Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of five years experience in producing market research products.
  • Minimum of three years of employee management experience required; can be indirect project-related management.
  • Demonstrated experience with complex project management.
  • Experience managing contracts and RFP processes to select subcontractors.
  • Fluency with both qualitative and quantitative research methods (surveying, in-depth interviews, focus groups, Delphi panels etc.)
  • Understanding of best practices for surveying techniques.
  • Understanding of statistical methods such as sampling, confidence intervals and extrapolation.
  • Knowledge of the energy industry, and HVAC and lighting markets desired.
  • Advanced degree in market research or equivalent field to demonstrate command of market research methods; or an equivalent combination of related experience and education.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and employ adaptive management techniques. 
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, including public speaking and technical writing.
  • Demonstrated experience with team leadership preferred.
  • High degree of demonstrated ability to understand and communicate technical subject matter.
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated ability to apply results and inform strategy development.
  • Proven ability to develop and understand budgets and contract terminology.
  • An orientation toward teamwork.
  • Experience following data security protocols.
