Communications Coordinator
The Midwest Tribal Energy Resources Association is a nonprofit intertribal organization serving 33 federally recognized Tribal Nations across Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. MTERA advances Tribal energy sovereignty through technical assistance, workforce development, coalition building, and policy advocacy.
$24-$30/ hr. - Negotiable, depending on experience

The Communications Coordinator supports the planning, development, and execution of MTERA's internal and external communications. Working under the direction of the Chief Operations Officer, the Coordinator produces written and digital content that advances the organization's mission, strengthens relationships with Member Tribes, and supports program, events, and partnership objectives. The position requires strong writing ability, sound judgment in representing an intertribal organization, and the capacity to work independently within a small remote team.
Communications Strategy and Content
• Work with department leads to develop and deliver an annual communications plan guiding the content, style, budget, and delivery of MTERA promotion, organizational storytelling, and audience engagement
• Draft, edit, and proofread newsletters, member communications, one-pagers, fliers, press releases, and website copy
• Design printed and digital promotional materials, including the membership brochure, business engagement pieces, and media kits
• Adapt technical program and policy information for Tribal energy leaders, community, partner, and funder audiences
• Support the Tribal Energy Voices storytelling series, including outreach to Member Tribes, interview coordination, and content development
Digital Communications
• Manage MTERA social media accounts in coordination with staff, with LinkedIn as the primary channel, including content calendars, content generation, scheduling, program promotion, and analytics
• Engage with Member Tribes, community members, and partners across platforms as appropriate
• Maintain and update the MTERA website (mtera.org) in WordPress, including annual content review, campaign sliders, and pop-up messaging
• Organize and maintain digital assets, photography, and brand files
• Compile engagement metrics and prepare periodic performance summaries
Member, Partner, and Stakeholder Communications
• Coordinate email campaigns directed to Member Tribes, Board members, partners, funders, and sponsors
• Curate the quarterly MTERA newsletter and biannual report, including writing and gathering articles, design, and editing
• Maintain audience groups, contact lists, and communications records within the email marketing platform and organizational project management system
• Support coalition and partnership communications, including coordinated outreach with allied organizations
Event Communications
• Assist in the development and execution of event marketing plans, including press releases, partner promotions, media kits, web assets, email campaigns, and graphic design
• Provide communications support for the MTERA Annual Summit, including save-the-date notices, registration promotion, sponsorship outreach sequences, awards nomination campaigns, and onsite content capture
• Support communications for workshops, trainings, and cohort programs throughout the program year
• Represent MTERA at events through exhibiting, presentations, and meetings as needed
Brand Standards and Organizational Support
• Maintain consistency of MTERA voice, messaging, and visual identity across all channels
• Develop templates, style documentation, and repeatable workflows to improve efficiency
• Maintain organized systems for initiatives, graphics, and deliverables
• Solicit printing and design quotes and order materials, including educational literature, promotional items, staff business cards, and event merchandise
• Participate in staff meetings, working groups, planning sessions, and the strategic planning process
• Attend Board of Directors meetings and prepare or present reports as needed
• Support monthly and quarterly grant reporting and organizational database maintenance
• Participate in professional development, self-evaluation, and staff hiring processes as appropriate • Perform other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Three or more years of professional experience in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related field. Equivalent education and relevant professional experience combinations will be considered.
• Demonstrated writing and editing proficiency across multiple formats and audiences, with strong verbal communication skills
• Working knowledge of email marketing platforms, social media management tools, website content management systems, and design software such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite
• Demonstrated understanding of and respect for Tribal sovereignty, Tribal governance structures, and the distinct identities of individual Tribal Nations, along with proven cross-cultural communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines independently in a remote work environment
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling organizational and member information
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Demonstrated professional experience working with Tribal Nations, Tribal organizations, or Native-led nonprofits
• Familiarity with energy, environmental, climate, or infrastructure subject matter
• Photography and graphic design capability
• Experience supporting grant or funder-facing communications
• Accustomed to working with a variety of software, demonstrating proficiency in word processing (i.e., MS Word and/or Google Docs), data management (i.e., Excel and/or Google Sheets), presentation software (PowerPoint/Canva) and experience with WordPress, Monday.com, or comparable platforms.
