MN350 is a dynamic, volunteer-led grassroots organization building a people’s movement to demand that Minnesota take action and leadership in addressing the climate crisis in an equitable and sustainable way.  MN350 is a 501(c)(3) organization.

MN350 Action is a 501(c)(4) advocacy nonprofit that is seeking to build a bold, diverse mass movement for climate justice by galvanizing public support and conducting direct, grassroots lobbying to demand change.  MN350 Action is a sister organization to MN350 that shares staff, offices and volunteers. MN350 and MN350 Action work collaboratively with the global 350.org* and numerous coalition partners to build a movement for climate justice. *

Primary Duties

SUMMARY

MN350 is seeking a dedicated, passionate, and experienced Executive Director who is committed to building power in community along with Minnesotans working to repair our public processes and treaty promises in order to transform our dominant economy to one that secures clean air, clean water, a stable climate and equitable future for all, first and foremost to communities most harmed.

Reporting to the MN350 Coordinating Council (Board of Directors), the Executive Director will bring overall strategic and operational capacity to support MN350 and MN350 Action’s staff, programs, expansion and execution of its mission.

 

POSITION

The role of the Executive Director is to operationalize the bold vision of MN350 leadership to build a statewide, multi-racial movement to stop global warming and achieve racial and economic justice. The Executive Director directs and develops organizational systems, including resource development,  infrastructure, accounting, finance, risk management, human resources, and legal operations in support of the organization’s mission to win equitable solutions to the climate crisis.

The Executive Director holds responsibility for fulfilling the goals of MN350’s strategic plan and shared vision in collaboration with the staff, Coordinating Council, Campaign Strategy Group, Action Teams and BIPOC Caucus internally as well as with other leaders, allies and stakeholders externally. They work to align leadership, membership, and staff around common work, and externally to build and shape our movement with the ultimate goal of achieving climate justice in Minnesota.

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Public Role:

  • Support staff and volunteer leadership in representing MN350 publicly by ensuring the organization and its mission and programs are consistently presented in a strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders such as community groups, allied organizations, campaign-driven coalitions and with the press. Directly represent as needed.

  • Develop and manage high-level partnerships with allies and key decision-makers within and outside the climate justice movement in order to pursue shared strategies that support MN350’s mission.

Leadership Development & Management:

  • Manage and support staff and key volunteer project coordinators to oversee the development and coordination of statewide campaigns and projects such as a racially just transition to 100% clean energy, affordable clean transportation, stopping dangerous fossil fuel infrastructure, and building political power for the climate justice movement.

  • Work with the staff members and key volunteer leaders to ensure the health and productive internal functioning of the organization, including critical staffing and resource allocation decisions, and providing prudent fiscal and legal management.

  • Work with staff members and key volunteer leaders in the alignment, development and dissemination of organizational culture, health, and growth.

  • Manage and work closely with the Coordinating Council (CC) and Campaign Strategy Group (CSG) to provide leadership and mentorship, and to oversee the effectiveness of their work as leadership bodies of MN350.

  • Support implementation and tracking of MN350’s strategic plan through regular review and updates on progress.

  • Support continued development of an equitable, statewide and scalable volunteer recruitment, training and delegation program to build and empower functional leaders and project coordinators capable of assuming major operational responsibilities for MN350.

  • Help develop and implement civic engagement and MN350 Action endorsement and political action campaigns.

Fiscal Management:

  • Oversee the bookkeeping and financial planning practices to facilitate effective funding for organizational activities.

  • Review and monitor month-end financials, cash balances, and internal program reports. Review and approve payroll, ensuring that all applicable payroll taxes and related benefits are paid in a timely manner.

  • Maintain all official records and documents; keep legal files and materials current.

  • Ensure timely compliance with all federal, state and local tax and legal regulations, including campaign finance reporting.

Fundraising and Marketing:

  • Manage all fundraising, including grant writing, developing and maintaining relationships with foundations and major donors and ensuring compliance with any grant reporting requirements.

  • Develop and supervise communications, web and social media staff and volunteer teams to assure consistent online communications and storytelling, online fundraising, and web services support.

Human Resources Management:

  • Oversee and perform the recruitment, management and evaluation of the MN350 staff team, including enforcement of any disciplinary actions in accordance with the personnel policies of MN350.

  • Develop processes, systems and practices to ensure MN350 operations can scale to support the growth of the movement and the growth of our staff/volunteer team.

  • Provide crisis management as needed.

Movement Engagement:

  • Understand MN350’s and 350.org’s history, campaigns and theory of social change, and keep current with basic climate science and policy. From time to time, use this knowledge to support staff and/or directly represent MN350’s perspective in campaign-driven coalitions, funder-led meetings and varied public venues.

  • From time to time, contribute work towards the national/global 350.org’s overall mission that relies solely on MN350’s relationship to 350.org’s extended network of local groups.

Experience

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Guidelines:

  • 7-10 years of professional experience in community organizing, electoral politics, issue advocacy or a closely related field is required.

  • 5-7 years of management experience with the ability to manage across departments, age, cultures, race, gender and economic variation is required.

  • Fundraising experience, including grant writing, with the demonstrated ability to ask for and receive money is required.

  • Experience with supporting an organization through change, as well as developing and implementing strategies that lead to organizational victories is preferred.

  • Understanding of 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(3) regulations and the basics of campaign finance laws is  preferred.

  • Relationally organized, having significant experience working with broad coalitions and multiracial communities with demonstrated ability to support inclusive engagement.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and skilled at working in a collaborative environment and cultivating strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Empathetic and demonstrating highly developed listening skills.

  • Ability to gracefully navigate complex and difficult relationships.

  • Commitment to self-examination, open to feedback from others and willing to ask for help.

  • Well organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage competing priorities; strong follow-through and ability to coordinate others to hold to deadlines and commitments.

  • Demonstrated success in building new programs and/or developing scalable infrastructure and systems; ability and eagerness to train, delegate, and empower others.

  • Demonstrated cultural competency including knowledge of Native American history, issues and world view preferred, with priority on Dakota and Anishinaabe teachings.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, a persuasive and passionate communicator.

  • Technical competency in Word, Excel, online communication tools and use of databases.

  • Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Somali, or Oromo a plus.
