CERTs SEED GRANT

The City of Vesta gets their lighting into shape

June 2026

CERTs loves to build relationships with towns we haven’t worked with before, and sometimes the smaller the better. When the City of Vesta (pop. 276) in Redwood County applied for a CERTs Seed Grant to improve the lighting at their community and fitness center, we were thrilled when the steering committee funded their project!

A small seed grant makes a big impact

City Clerk Brooke Guetter shared details of the project.

“Our project for the City of Vesta included the installation of 325 new LED light bulbs and 9 motion sensors to reduce unnecessary energy use and improve overall building efficiency. We anticipate potential energy savings of more than $200 per month, as a result of these upgrades.”

The project serves Vesta residents who use the community center along with over 100 people who regularly use the fitness center co-located there.

“Small, rural cities like Vesta don’t have the same access to resources and funding opportunities as larger cities,” says Nadya Bucklin, SW CERT regional coordinator and planner with the Southwest Regional Development Commission. “With this CERTs Seed Grant funding, Vesta was able to invest in its community’s sustainability goals, give their facilities an updated feel, and save money on their energy bills. For cities with smaller budgets, any amount of money saved is an amount that can be put toward another community need.”

The project grows

When asked about the potential for future projects, Guetter noted, “We have dabbled with the idea of solar. When I checked into it awhile ago we had enough space on our community center to power everything the city owns. Very preliminary but exciting!”

CERTs looks forward to working in partnership with Vesta leaders to explore more ways to save money on their clean energy journey.

"Finally, just a really big thank you! I'm so happy that your committee picked our project and it has been such a delight working with you all."
