One Roof Community Housing links long-term stewardship with home energy improvements

April 2026

A local housing nonprofit is bridging the gap between affordable homeownership and energy efficiency following a collaborative effort to streamline complex financial resources for residents.

One Roof Community Housing recently completed a project aimed at empowering income-qualified homeowners to reduce utility costs and improve home comfort. The initiative, sparked by the organization’s participation in Clean Energy Resource Teams’ Community Energy Ambassadors cohort, focused on identifying the specific "envelope" improvements — such as windows, insulation, and doors — that residents prioritize.

“This project allowed the time and ability to take information that is needed and take out the noise,” Brooke Tapp at One Roof Housing says, noting that homeowners were already focused on the correct first steps for efficiency but often struggled to navigate the sea of available rebates and loans.

The project resulted in a new webinar and updated digital resources on the One Roof website, integrating tools from Clean Energy Resource Teams and Rewiring America to help residents find financing, free programs, and grants.

One Roof operates by purchasing houses and selling them below market value to qualified buyers. The organization maintains a long-term stewardship relationship with these homeowners to ensure the houses remain financially feasible and well-maintained.

Their Clean Energy Ambassador cohort project focused on creating educational resources to bridge the "knowledge gap" that often prevents people from adopting energy-saving habits or technologies. While the immediate uptake of these resources has been slow, project leaders argue that the long-term value of the initiative lies in the permanent availability of the resources.

“Being part of the cohort made it happen. It came at the right time to allow us to get the information we wanted to get.”

Staff member presenting to a groupBy creating a lasting library of specialized knowledge, One Roof ensures that current and future homeowners have the tools to reduce their carbon footprint and utility costs whenever they are ready to make those changes. To ensure this information remains a community staple, the partnership's webinar was recorded and remains accessible on YouTube and the One Roof website, allowing homeowners to engage with the training and resources at their own pace.

Beyond public education, participation in the Community Energy Ambassadors cohort provided vital professional development for One Roof staff, including specialized training and certification around clean energy topics. This internal capacity-building ensured that staff were not just facilitators of the program, but informed experts capable of guiding homeowners through complex energy transitions.

According to One Roof’s Brooke Tapp, the structured environment of the cohort was the essential catalyst for this progress.

“Being part of the cohort made it happen. It came at the right time to allow us to get the information we wanted to get.”

This synergy between staff certification and the permanent availability of public resources ensures that the program’s impact continues long after the initial cohort concludes.
