This is a fully remote position. In this role, you will lead the development, innovation, and execution of our content strategy and communications training program. This is a great opportunity for someone with strong writing, communications, and content marketing skills, especially if you’re passionate about environmental justice and movement-building. We recognize that excellent candidates may not check every box below, but if you bring relevant skills or experience we haven’t considered, we encourage you to apply and tell us how you can contribute to our mission.

The Content Specialist will lead content development and support communications efforts across platforms and programs.

Responsibilities are divided as follows:

Content Strategy (30%):

  • Develop and maintain a cross-platform content calendar and strategy (email newsletter, website content, and social media).
  • Collaborate with the Community Associate to design and execute a community and content strategy for LinkedIn.
  • Identify and test new content platforms and communications tools.
  • Manage the Lab’s email platform, including supporting an upcoming system migration.
  • Work closely with staff to write and edit the Lab’s weekly newsletter.
  • Identify content opportunities in new or old research and resources.
  • Track and report on platform analytics (Google Analytics, email metrics, etc.)

Writing and graphic design (30%):

  • Write content for email, website updates, social media, reports, and training materials.
  • Collaborate across teams to ensure program content is engaging, clear and impactful.
  • Create simple graphics for training sessions and external communications using tools like Canva (advanced graphic design skills are a “nice to have”).
  • Maintain and organize The Lab’s image library.

Product Management (20%):

  • Manage the development of resource guides and other web projects.
  • Support improvements to website structure and information architecture.
  • Collaborate with teams to develop promotion plans and supporting content for reports and other programs.

Training (10%):

  • Lead 1-2 standalone communications/content trainings a year for Lab members
  • Support the training team in developing collateral such as slide decks, supplementary materials, and recruitment materials.

Miscellaneous (10%):

  • Provide production support for weekly newsletter and other email communications.
  • Attend and summarize relevant trainings, integrate key insights into the Lab’s content and communication strategy.
  • Actively participate in weekly team meetings, strategy sessions, and periodic offsites to support organizational collaboration.
  • Travel occasionally for in-person trainings, team retreats, and partner events.
Experience

We’re looking for someone with a mix of strategic thinking, excellent communication skills, and a deep commitment to social and climate justice. The ideal candidate will have the following:

Writing & Content Strategy

  • 3-4+ years of experience writing content for specific audiences, including email, social media, and web content.
  • Skilled at turning complex, academic, or jargon-heavy writing into clear, engaging, impactful content with strong narrative hooks
  • 1–2+ years of experience developing content strategy and calendars, with a strong knowledge of content syndication, pacing, and how to tailor content to different platforms/channels.
  • Ability to track and analyze performance of digital programs like email, web, and social media.
  • Basic graphic design skills, using tools like Canva.
  • Understanding of information architecture and/or user experience principles, or a strong desire/ability to learn.

Project Management & Collaboration Skills:

  • Highly self-motivated and detail-oriented, with the ability to work independently, take initiative, and follow through on tasks with minimal supervision; demonstrate a willingness to experiment, iterate, and adapt in a dynamic learning environment.
  • Strong time and project management skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively in a cross-departmental team while meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an emphasis on relational trust-building and cross-team collaboration.
  • Forward-thinking and collaborative mindset, with an openness to innovation, experimentation, and thought partnership.

Training & Travel

  • Experience facilitating creative, fun, interactive, impactful trainings, across a diversity of skill levels, perspectives, lived experiences, and learning styles.
  • Ability and willingness to travel approximately 2-4 days once per quarter for in-person training, offsites, convenings, or partner events.

Education

  • No formal education required. We value lived experience, skills, and expertise over degrees or credentials.

NICE-TO-HAVES: (Not required, but a bonus if you bring any of the following):

  • Experience in at least one of the following areas of advocacy work: grassroots organizing, digital strategy, lobbying, or coalition management (can include supporting any of these areas as a comms/digital staffer).
