Organization Summary

Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate (HPHC) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with hundreds of interdisciplinary health professional members across Minnesota focused on protecting and improving human health by promoting climate health and justice. We educate health professionals, the public, and policymakers about the health impacts of climate change, and advocate for policies and institutional changes that address climate change mitigation and build resilience to protect public health. HPHC promotes climate equity policies that dismantle existing environmental racism, creates a just and equitable transition to a carbon-free economy, and prioritizes working with Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, and other marginalized communities to create climate resilience and healthy, thriving communities. HPHC’s work is led by a small staff including an Executive Director, Communications Manager, and Organizer & Outreach Coordinator who work closely together with the guidance and lead participation of a volunteer Executive Committee and six-member Board of Directors. Hours

HPHC offers a 32-hour workweek and prioritizes staff wellbeing. The EEC will be given two weeks paid time off, additional holiday and sick time off, and a generous stipend for health and other employee benefits. We encourage people who have been impacted by systems of oppression to apply. Primary Duties

About the Education & Engagement Coordinator (EEC) Position - HPHC seeks an Education & Engagement Coordinator (EEC) to develop and coordinate education program components including health information materials, professional conferences, multimodal climate conversations, and cohort learning opportunities. The EEC position is primarily remote and requires residence in Minnesota. Some evening and weekend work is required, as well as travel for events and networking with members across the state. The EEC will work with HPHC’s Executive Director, Communications Manager, Organizer & Outreach Coordinator, Executive Committee, and volunteer leaders to advance strategies, campaigns, and events that support health equity and climate justice at the intersection of frontline communities, health professionals, and health systems. The EEC should have experience in project management, event coordination, writing narratives from various perspectives, and volunteer recruitment and oversight. The EEC should be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with community members, health professionals, staff, and volunteers. 

What You’ll Do:

The EEC’s time will be spent developing and implementing education materials, base-building, and engaging and supporting volunteer health professionals, all of which require some administrative activity. The essential functions of this position include and are not limited to:

  • With prior information and team experience as a jumping off point, survey target audiences about education objectives and collate and/or conduct a needs assessment to help determine education priorities.
  • Develop regular climate and health education programming that addresses the needs of diverse health professionals and attracts new participants.
  • Co-author health information sheets and educational materials.
  • Project manage education initiatives including co-creating promotion schedules, overseeing timelines, and creating budgets.
  • Take the lead in planning and delivering online, in-person, and hybrid curriculum through presentations, conferences, workshops, climate conversations, and discussion groups.
  • Attract and engage program participation by health professionals from myriad disciplines and diverse regions throughout the state.
  • Facilitate orientation sessions and conduct 1:1 follow-up meetings with health professionals interested in joining HPHC’s network.
  • With lead staff, co-facilitate Education & Engagement committee, as well as event planning committees on an as-needed basis.
  • Participate in staff and executive committee meetings to enhance collaboration.
  • Track monthly volunteer hours contributed to education efforts.
  • Work closely with HPHC staff and volunteer committees to help carry out HPHC’s strategic plan.
Experience

About You - You are outgoing and appreciate the value of relationships. You are a strong communicator and have an understanding of climate issues including and not limited to air pollution, extreme heat/weather, infectious disease, and mental stress. You understand human health concerns related to climate change (e.g., allergies; asthma; cancer; cardiovascular and infectious disease; diabetes; eye and skin sensitivities; kidney, pulmonary, and respiratory problems; premature death; anxiety, depression, grief, and more). The EEC will have:

  • A background in education, environmental studies, health, public health, or experience working with nonprofits or community-based organizations.
  • Excellent knowledge of climate change, environmental justice, public health, and related issues.
  • Ability to lead and motivate people — including individual volunteers and organizational leaders to enact peer-to-peer education.
  • Skills in communicating effectively about health equity, public health, and climate justice.
  • Ability to build and sustain professional relationships over time.
  • Experience using digital and other organizing tools and materials to educate and activate individuals and groups.
  • Residency in Minnesota and enjoy the ability to work in teams and manage multiple tasks in a remote work environment that relies on personal accountability, follow-through, interpersonal responsiveness, and meeting deadlines.
  • A passion for and commitment to Minnesota-based climate solutioning guided by anti-oppression values and principles.
