The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce (MCC) is a statewide advocacy organization representing 6,300 businesses and over 500,000 employees across Minnesota. We advocate on a broad array of business issues that affect businesses’ bottom line. Advocacy includes legislative representation at the state capitol and individual business assistance through our programs. Events and sponsorship programming support our advocacy and membership representation and service. Waste Wise and Energy Smart are programs of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. The programs work in close partnership through the Minnesota Waste Wise Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit affiliate of the Chamber, to promote environmentally sustainable practices which help businesses save money through waste reduction, resource conservation, environmental sustainability, and energy efficiency.

Annual salary range: $95,000-$105,000 (commensurate with experience)

Primary Duties

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Environmental Sustainability Director leads the sustainability programs of the Minnesota Chamber, which currently includes Waste Wise and Energy Smart. Responsible for annual program performance and financial objectives of the sustainability programs. The position leads the department with overall management responsibility for several direct and indirect reports. The position is also responsible for ensuring that all staff provide program services to as many Minnesota Chamber members as possible. Reports directly to the VP, Program and Business Services/MWWF Executive Director, and indirect reporting to the MWWF Board of Directors. SPECIFIC DUTIES: 1. Serve as the primary environmental sustainability team member of the Minnesota Chamber. 2. Develops, implements, monitors, and communicates recommendations for an environmental strategy for the Foundation and Chamber in alignment with the overall mission and goals, and in partnership with the Chamber’s executive leadership. 3. Oversee and lead all aspects of the sustainability programs, including Waste Wise and Energy Smart. 4. Financial management of the Foundation’s sustainability programs, which include Waste Wise, Energy Smart, and more. 5. Develop and manage annual goals, ensuring all contract and program goals are achieved. Adhere to reporting and data through contract requirements. 6. Foster connection between Waste Wise/Energy Smart program staff and the Minnesota Chamber as a whole. 7. Oversee programmatic program communications strategy and distribution, in alignment with the Chamber’s brand management standards. 8. Research and develop new voluntary and innovative environmental sustainability programs that reflect the MWWF mission and its work in supporting Minnesota Chamber members and Minnesota’s business community. 9. Seek and secure new MWWF funding including development of new grant proposals and oversight of contract activities including annual reporting. 10. Lead Waste Wise and Energy Smart Program Managers on day-to-day activities and annual performance reviews; provide support to ensure all department team members reach annual goals. 11. Develop and support project teams by creating content to respond to RFPs regarding environmental and sustainability information. 12. Engages with external stakeholders, including board members, volunteers, sponsors, government partners, businesses, and contractors and suppliers on environmental and sustainability matters. 13. Conduct Waste Wise and Energy Smart visits and follow-up for contract clients as well as MCC members outside of MWWF contract areas.

Experience

QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Seven+ years of executive leadership and technical expertise in the area of environmental sustainability, including, but not limited to waste management and energy efficiency. 2. Seven+ years of experience in revenue development, grant-making, and managing budgets. 3. Bachelor’s degree in business management, environmental sustainability, engineering, communications, or related field. 4. Sustainability certifications held including, but not limited to Certified Energy Manager (CEM), LEED Accreditation, CFA ESG, Project Management, etc. 5. Experience with the development, implementation, and ongoing operation of a successful sustainability management program. 6. Extensive supervisory experience with multi-generational team members. 7. Experience working within Minnesota’s business community. 8. Ability to multi-task and manage several multiple-stakeholder projects simultaneously. 9. Ability to support executive-level decision-making. 10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to listen well and work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization. 11. Excellent presentation skills and ability to communicate in an organized manner on environmental issues to both large and small audiences, media, and businesses. 12. Ability to work effectively on both high-level, strategic issues and tactical deliverables. 13. Ability to lead effective cross-functional teams and build consensus. 14. Highly networked within Minnesota’s environmental sustainability sector. 15. Ability to create and maintain positive working relationships with external stakeholders and staff.

RELEVANT INFORMATION: This is a full-time exempt position with comprehensive benefits and involves travel within Minnesota. The position is hybrid and will be performed both remotely and onsite at various locations within Minnesota with the main office located at 380 St. Peter Street, Suite 1050, Saint Paul, MN 55102. Work hours will typically be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with occasional evening and weekend hours.
