Six Minnesota Power case studies about energy-saving programs for schools and homeowners

Over the last couple of years, Minnesota Power has been compiling several energy efficiency success stories under the headings Learn & Earn and Save & Benefit, and we’re taking this opportunity to share them!

8th Annual Energy Awareness Expo
An Energy Awareness Expo was held for low or fixed-income families on October 27th, 2011, at the Salvation Army on the west side of Duluth, sponsored by the Arrowhead Economic Agency, Minnesota Power and Duluth’s Comfort Systems. The Expo has expanded its services over the last eight years, now including information on energy-saving appliances and programs like CARE, which offers discounts on electric bills for qualified families. The possible savings can be astonishing. This event helps demonstrate how teamwork can help make great changes in the community.

Conner-Jasper Middle School
Students of a science class in Connor-Jasper Middle School participated in side-by-side comparisons of ENERGY STAR-rated light bulbs with other models. After finding impressive results with ENERGY STAR bulbs they took the challenge to inform their community. The Learn and Earn program allowed these students to make a positive change in their community, while learning and earning money for their school.

Crosby-Ironton Schools work with SEE
Making little changes in behavior can make a big difference in your community. The Crosby-Ironton School District demonstrates this perfectly by unplugging small appliances and removing unnecessary light bulbs they have reduced their electricity budget dramatically since 2008. They are also earning money for their school with every unit of energy that is saved. With the help of Schools for Energy Efficiency, Minnesota Power and Minnesota Energy Resources, the school has seen dramatic results.

Fighting Homelessness with Energy Savings
Minnesota Power offers opportunities for communities to work together to make a difference through energy efficiency. They partnered with a number of faith communities, Heading Home St. Louis County, and United Ways of Greater Duluth and Northeastern Greater Duluth and Northeastern Minnesota to fight homelessness via the promotion of ENERGY STAR-rated products. Through the sale and collection of products the community raised $7,800 for the United Way and the effort will save nearly $99,450 in energy costs over the next five years.

Cloquet Elementary and Pequot Middle School Students
The students of Pequot Lakes and Cloquet, Minnesota have both benefitted from the Learn and Earn program. Fifth graders focused their learning on CFL bulbs, LED holiday lights, and ENERGY STAR-rated appliances. They shared this knowledge with their fellow students by travelling to other classrooms and creating posters that were hung around their school. The Pequot Lakes Middle School focused on educating their parents about these products via a booth during school conferences. Both were very successful events.

Chisolm High School
Chisholm High School held a very successful event that raised two thousand dollars! This money was raised by working hard to promote the use of ENERGY STAR-rated light bulbs.
