Solar works for businesses and residents in Maplewood!

This past Tuesday Metro CERT launched a new series of workshops to help communities learn about solar, connect to resources, and take steps to act on an opportunity to install a solar array on their home or business.

Our first workshop, Solar Works! in Maplewood, was hosted by the Maplewood Nature Center where they installed solar panels this summer with support from the Solar Legacy Grants that were issued through the Department of Natural Resources the past few years. There was a full room of interested Maplewood residents and a number of them at the end said they were seriously considering adopting solar energy!

The workshop featured Todd Fink from Century College who shared some basic energy information, the flavors of solar energy out there, solar potential in Minnesota, and answered questions. We also had a solar owner panel with a homeowner and an apartment building owner that both installed solar electric panels in the past few years in Maplewood. After that we heard from the company that installed the solar energy for the Maplewood Nature Center.

At the end of the presentations people were able to visit resource tables to get more information about solar energy, as well as energy efficiency and conservation. The resource organizations included the City of Maplewood, Xcel Energy, Minnesota Renewable Energy Society and Metro CERT.

Our next workshop will be next week, Thursday, October, 20, 2011 in Oakdale at the Oakdale Discovery Center.
