Primary Duties

Nature of Work

Under supervision, implements sustainability initiatives and projects across Olmsted County. Develops and distributes outreach materials for departments and community groups. Researches information, makes recommendations, and manages sustainability projects. Collaborates with external organizations, such as cities, counties, state, and federal government, nonprofits, and industry groups, to gather resources and coordinate collective efforts toward sustainability goals. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.

Examples of Work

 

  • Coordinates and implements the Olmsted County Climate Change Action Plan, sustainability priorities in the Strategic Plan, sustainability and other conservation initiatives. Manages projects, conducts status reviews, and communicates progress updates.
  • Collects and analyzes environmental data to track progress of sustainability goals and identify areas of improvement.
  • Compiles information and prepares reports.
  • Conducts site and sustainability assessments and status reviews to support conservation programs.
  • Researches grant funding and leads grant writing for sustainability efforts across Olmsted County.
  • Researches and monitors federal and state sustainability policies and recommends improvements for environmental, economic, and social performance.
  • Researches and recommends technology for environmental, economic, and social performance.
  • Creates multi-media outreach including news releases, social media content, newsletters, ArcGIS StoryMaps, videos, brochures, posters, and other documents and coordinates distribution.
  • Researches, recommends, and communicates benchmarks, best practices, and strategies for greenhouse gas, carbon emission, energy consumption, water usage, and other types of environmental data.
  • Presents reports and represents the Physical Development division at public hearings, presentations, and community meetings which may take place outside of regular business.
  • Performs field surveys and assessments, recommends design, reviews project eligibility, and identifies program opportunities.
  • Works on special projects as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  • Knowledge of urban and rural sustainability principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national sustainability and climate issues.  
  • Knowledge of public engagement techniques and practices.
  • Knowledge of grant writing process.
  • Skill in project management.  
  • Skill in the use of basic mathematics, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Skill in the use of computers and technology including ArcGIS.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication including public speaking.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and technical documents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to research, collect, and interpret data to make recommendations.
  • Ability to perform field surveys.

Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in environmental science, sustainable management, planning, public administration, environmental engineering or conservation, or related field and two (2) years of related experience.
OR
Associate’s degree from an accredited college in environmental science or related field and four (4) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
OR
A combination of education and experience equivalent to six (6) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
